For any industry which comprises of blunt individuals, controversies are bound to happen. Be it Punjab or the Punjabi industry, the straightforwardness of people living or working inside has it in it to ignite flames.

Much like its predecessor, the year 2020 was also witness to Punjabi artists taking on each other, fans, trolls and people from other industries for both valid and forced reasons. While some of the controversies which happened this year could’ve been and should’ve been avoided, some others were around larger interests.

It is deplorable when public figures take jibes at each other publicly but it is even more satisfying when public figures join hands with each other to share stage and fight for a common cause – which more or less has been the gist of 2020 as far as the Punjabi entertainment industry is concerned.

Diljit Dosanjh vs Kangana Ranaut

It was nearly a month ago when a spat between Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut had taken social media platform Twitter by storm. If a sudden increase in new users protesting against the three recently implemented farm laws in India on Twitter wasn’t enough, Dosanjh giving it back in style to Ranaut further increased the engagement manifold times on the platform.

After a severe war of words between Dosanjh and Ranaut, the former received ample support from the likes of Gippy Grewal, Ammy Virk, Mika Singh, Jazzy B, Sargun Mehta and many others.

While neither of the two could convince each other about the farm laws, the next few days had witnessed Ranaut taking sly digs at Dosanjh which once again received street-smart response from the singer-turned-actor.

Mandy Takhar fake video

Actress Mandy Takhar became victim of cyber bullying in August when a fake video was being circulated in her name. In the video, Takhar’s face was morphed on a girl involved in an obscene act.

Being falsely propagated across the state as Takhar’s leaked video, the clip went viral to highlight the disturbing mentality of people who started it in the first place and the ones who willfully watched it and forwarded it to their contacts.

The matter was eventually addressed by Takhar in the form of an Instagram story in which she slammed and warned the perpetrators and thanked all her colleagues who expressed support towards her.

It is worth mentioning that Takhar had received strong support from the likes of Diljit Dosanjh, Neeru Bajwa, Ammy Virk and Sonam Bajwa and many others. Takhar eventually took the matter to the police and launched an FIR.

Sidhu Moose Wala alluring headlines throughout the year

Lyricist-turned-singer Sidhu Moose Wala, who registered in vicinity of a dozen songs this year, continued to allure headlines outside of his music as well. While the sensational artist was needlessly involved in a few controversies, he was somewhat wrong on a few occasions to find himself amidst severe criticism.

In May, Moose Wala was booked under the Arms Act after photographs and videos of him firing an AK-47 rifle at a shooting range during the Covid-19 lockdown went viral. Some Police officials, who had accompanied Moose Wala to the shooting range, were themselves suspended.

Moose wala, who gathered a lot of unwanted attention due to the incident, added to his problems upon releasing a single track titled ‘Sanju’. Containing the reference of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt getting arrested under the Arms Act back in the day, Moose Wala was seen and heard boasting about his case in the song which saw him facing more moral and legal ramifications.

After a month or two, Moose Wala was amidst an online battle with fans of veteran singer-turned-actor Babbu Maan. While a lot of people said a lot of things and faults were found depending on which side one was on, it was a controversy which wasn’t needed and should’ve been avoided by both the parties.

Even the year 2020 couldn’t help Moose Wala regarding protecting his songs for some of them continued to get leaked in different ways. Apart from all this, the budding actor was also involved in online arguments with many of his contemporaries.
