Year 2014 was of huge losses for Punjabi Film Industry. The year saw 35 films releasing at the box office and only a few managed to win the hearts of Punjabi audience, rest were flops. Here is the year-end analysis of Punjabi Cinema for the year 2014 by Punjabi Mania.
TOP HITS OF 2014
Out of all our lists, this one had the scarcity of names. Only 3 films ended up successfully at the box office. These are:
1. Chaar Sahibzaade
Based on the lives of sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the movie broke all records of earnings at the box office. The film was a huge success. Directed by Harry Baweja, this religious animation was applauded by Punjabis all around the globe.
2. Punjab 1984
A story of a mother and her lost son in the backdrop of Operation Bluestar in 1984 is one of the best scripts of Punjabi movies released so far. The strong characters, emotions and a brilliant acting brought tears in many eyes. This Anurag Singh film was a milestone in Punjabi Film Industry.
3. Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo
This movie was a relief for the the Punjabi audience from all those stale comedies. It can be termed as one of the career defining films of Amrinder Gill. This Pankaj Batra film was a comedy but with a story.
Apart from them, Jatt James Bond of Gippy Grewal was also appreciated by the Punjabi audience but this high budget movie failed to meet its costs. Ksshitij Chaudhary’s Mr & Mrs 420 also garnered public interest. This low budget movie is believed to reach its breakeven.
TOP DISAPPOINTMENTS OF 2014
2014 saw many star powered films going flop. There were huge expectations from these films, but they ended up disappointing. Here is a list of top disappointments.
1. Aa Gaye Munde UK De
The movie starred Jimmy Sheirgill, Neeru Bajwa, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Binnu Dhillon, directed by the much respected Manmohan Singh. This movie had every ingredient of success except one, a good story. The sequel of successful Munde UK De turned out to be a disappointment.
2. Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar
The movie starred Punjabi legend Gurdas Mann along with Neeru Bajwa and Jassi Gill. Directed by Manjit Mann, the film had a poor story line which disappointed the Punjabi audience.
3. Romeo Ranjha
Jazzy B and Garry Sandhu together in a Navniat Singh film. The film had strong action but still could not woo the audience.
4. Proper Patola
This movie was much hyped for being the first Punjabi movie with a female double role. It had Neeru Bajwa, Harish Verma and Yuvraj Hans. This Harish Vyas film not only had a poor story but also a poor title which was nowhere apt.
5. Kirpaan
Roshan Prince in a complete new avatar raised expectations. But a poor execution and a monotonous screenplay disappointed audience at large.
WHITEWASHES OF 2014
There were many films in 2014 which opened to dull empty houses. Following is the list of movies which ran to empty seats.
1. Oh My Pyo Ji
This film brought comedian Binnu Dhillon in the lead role. The legal tussles first delayed its release and later it got a very small release. Niharika Sahni’s this romantic comedy found no audience.
2. Police in Pollywod
We all have enjoyed Bhagwant Mann’s comedy films before. This film was a satire on Police. However Sunita Dhir’s film was scripted poorly and found no takers.
3. Marriage Da Garriage
Navraj Hans and Keeya Khanna got together for this film. But the film found no viewers, however people do ridiculed the title of this Jaswinder Singh’s film.
4. Fateh
Based on martial art, this film is a story of transformation. Debutant Nav Bajwa was the lead of the film. Director Jaspreet Rajan’s film fell flat on the box office.
5. Control Bhaji Control
This film had Karan Kundra and Sangram Singh in the lead roles. A comedy by Gaurav Singh. This film not only missed a good story but also the audience.
“NEVER HEARD OF” IN 2014
Punjabi films were recently made at such a pace that sometimes due to lack of publicity, few movies went unnoticed. Following are the movies you might have never heard of in 2014:
1. Arsho
Starring Mannat, Daksh Ajit and Sonia Gill, this Shapinder Pal Singh film went unnoticed.
2. Main Teri Tu Mera
Starring Gurdeep Sandhu, Shaila and Rajesh, this was a Musical Action Love Story. This fusion of 3 genres could not save the movie. This Surinder Sagar film was a whitewash at the box office.
3. Idiot Boys
Starring Meet Surmeet, Rammi Mittal, this was based on drama genre. Anandd Nirola’s film came a week after Goreyan Nu Daffa Karo and went unnoticed at the box office.
4. Cross Connection
Starring Gary Waraich, Nancy Johal, this is the last film of the year. Nishant Bhardwaj’s comedy also went unnoticed at the box office.
5. Ho Jave Je Pyar
Starring Feroza Kaur Heer, Zorawar Singh, this was Shirin Anandita’s love story. The film had a limited release. It opened to just 4 screens and went unnoticed.
Troubled Films
Certain films in 2014 could not make it to the cinemas. Certain did reach there, but their ride wasn’t that smooth. Following is the list of troubled films of 2014:
1. Kaum De Heere
Based on the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the movie was banned by the central government to prevent any untoward situation. The producers appealed against the decision and also tried to run a public movement like Saada Haq. But they failed to yield the support of mass. The film is banned till date.
2. Dilli 1984
Based on the riots of 1984, often turned as Punjabi Genocide, the movie was not certified by the Censor and hence could not make it to the theatres.
3. Oh My Pyo Ji
The movie was involved in a legal tussle. A dispute over the ownership of the film was filed in the District courts of Ludhiana. The court had put a stay on the release of the movie. However later, Niharika Sahni was permitted to exhibit the movie. The movie got a limited release and ended up in losses.
4. Romeo Ranjha
Originally titled as Rombo Ranjha, the movie violated the copyright of English film series. The producers of original Rambo series have copyrighted the word Rambo making it unavailable for other filmmakers. Upon receiving a notice from the English the movie was retitled to Romeo Ranjha.
Troubled Celebrities
Year 2014 was not just troublesome for the films but also for the celebrities as well. The Enforcement Directorate raided and issued notices to Punjabi Celebrities for financial irregularities.
Jazzy B, Diljit Dosanjh, Gippy Grewal and Miss Pooja were all investigated for a possible violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.
