Punjabi music producer Pinky Dhaliwal has been released from police custody following orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The relief comes after he was arrested in connection with allegations of attempting to cheat and mentally harass Punjabi singer Sunanda Sharma. While Dhaliwal’s release has been granted, it is not a formal bail; rather, it is based on the court’s directive due to procedural issues surrounding his arrest.
Sunanda Sharma, who had previously accused Dhaliwal of exploiting her emotionally and financially, expressed her feelings of injustice through an emotional social media post after his arrest. She shared her distress over the treatment she endured in the music industry, describing producers like Dhaliwal as "crocodiles" who take advantage of vulnerable artists.
In her post, Sharma wrote: “This is not an issue of contract or money; it’s about making me mentally ill. This is an issue faced by every artist who comes from a common family, an artist who dreams and gets trapped in the nets of such crocodiles.”
She further explained the emotional toll the situation had taken on her, recounting how she had been forced to work tirelessly while producers like Dhaliwal filled their own pockets at her expense. Sharma described the dehumanizing treatment, stating that artists like herself were often treated as beggars. “They make us work hard and fill their own homes with our labor. Then they say that we have stopped them. O Waheguru, the people you have created have started thinking themselves above you,” she wrote in her post.
Sharma went on to reveal the personal anguish she had faced, writing: “I have cried alone in my room. Many times, I tried to kill myself, but I always showed up smiling in front of people. I was wise enough to not let anyone see my sorrow. If I had cried, some other crocodile would have started chasing me.”
She called on others who may have suffered at the hands of such individuals to unite and take a stand. “I don’t know how many more people like me have been made victims by such people. All of you come together, this is our era, it is our hard work, and we should get the fruits of it. This is the time to unite,” she wrote, urging solidarity among artists.
The case has sparked considerable debate within the Punjabi music industry, with many questioning the practices of producers and the pressures faced by emerging artists. While Pinky Dhaliwal has now been released from police custody, the case continues to be closely watched as it unfolds, particularly in light of the serious allegations made by Sunanda Sharma.
