Rapper Badshah Faces Legal Hurdle Over ‘Bawla’ Song Payment Row

0% Liked

Popular rapper Badshah has found himself entangled in a financial dispute concerning his hit track ‘Bawla’. A Karnal-based firm, Unisys Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd., has alleged that the artist failed to clear outstanding dues of nearly Rs 2.88 crore, despite the track’s successful release and promotion.

Deal and Dispute

As per the company, Badshah had signed an agreement with them on June 30, 2021, covering production and promotional activities for the song. The contract outlined payments of Rs 1.05 crore for promotions and Rs 65 lakh for the music video. ‘Bawla’ was released a month later, on July 28, 2021, across YouTube and other streaming platforms.

Unisys claims it fulfilled all obligations under the deal and subsequently raised two invoices in May 2022—one of Rs 76.70 lakh (including GST) and another worth Rs 1.83 crore. The firm maintains that despite repeated reminders and legal notices through 2023 and 2024, the dues remain unpaid.

Court Intervention

The matter was brought before the Commercial Court in Karnal, where Unisys requested that Badshah’s assets be secured until arbitration proceedings commence. On May 7, 2024, the court asked the rapper to disclose his holdings. He presented a Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) of Rs 1.70 crore, which the court ordered to be frozen.

In a more recent directive dated August 16, 2024, Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu instructed Badshah to deposit an additional Rs 50 lakh in another FDR within 60 days. Both deposits will remain under judicial custody, and the rapper cannot withdraw the funds without prior court approval.

Ongoing Proceedings

Failure to comply with the latest order could expose Badshah to stricter legal measures. The case continues to be contested, with Advocates Amit and S.L. Nirwania representing the company, and Advocate Vijendra Parmar appearing for Badshah.

Industry watchers say the dispute underscores the growing trend of contractual clashes within India’s fast-expanding music and entertainment sector.
