‘Sardar or Gaddar?’: Sardaar Ji 3 Row Echoes in Punjab Assembly as CM Bhagwant Mann Defends Diljit Dosanjh

The ongoing controversy surrounding Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh and his film Sardaar Ji 3 made its way into the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Friday, as a senior leader took a strong stand against the film's ban in India and the vilification of the actor.

Speaking during the special session of the Assembly, the leader slammed those calling Dosanjh a “gaddar” (traitor) for working with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. “You call him 'gaddar' and don’t allow his film to be released in India. Sometimes you call him ‘Sardar,’ and sometimes ‘gaddar.’ What kind of hypocrisy is this?” he questioned.

He further clarified that the film was completed before the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which has been cited by critics as a reason for opposing the film’s release. “Sardaar Ji 3 was shot before the deadliest Pahalgam attack. Linking the film to that tragedy is unfair and misleading. Will you now give us a certificate of nationalism?” he added.

The remarks sparked murmurs in the House and highlighted the growing tension between artistic freedom and political sentiment. While Sardaar Ji 3 continues to do well overseas, its absence from Indian theatres has drawn backlash from both the film industry and sections of the political class.

The Assembly statement is being seen as one of the strongest defences of Diljit Dosanjh yet, as debate intensifies over whether patriotism should dictate the release and reception of artistic work.
