There are a handful of actresses who are known more by the sight of their on-screen characters than their real self. Apart from being uber-talented, these actresses must have been born under a lucky star because for an actress to be known exclusively by her character is perhaps the biggest compliment.
Visit Punjab or meet the followers of Punjabi cinema and take the names of Dhann Kaur, Jessica Brar, Saggi or Ameeran, you will witness a horde of people being able to relate to one ubiquitous face. A face which has dominated the hearts of the Punjabi audience with her grandeur and finesse in the past three years. A face of Sargun Mehta!
Yes, a total of mere three years and four movies is what it has taken for this face to become one of the leading actresses of Punjab. There has been no looking back for Sargun since her debut in the Punjabi cinema. Post which, she has allured accolades and awards at will.
With more than half a decade of experience of TV serials under her belt, Sargun Mehta, alias Dhann Kaur, entered the Punjabi film industry in 2015 with Simerjit Singh's period triangular love story, 'Angrej'. Amongst the highest grossing Punjabi movies ever, Angrej saw Dhann Kaur not only leaving her co-star in Geja (Amrinder Gill) spellbound, but also observed her leaving an enticing impression on the whole of Punjab.
The following year, a troubled wife and a concerned mother in Jessica Brar crossed all bothers and borders for the sake of her child in Rajiv Dhingra's 'Love Punjab'. The movie was a testament to the fact that Sargun Mehta and Amrinder Gill's chemistry in Angrej wasn't a one-off fixture and that this pair had a sparkling potential to enthral the Punjabi demography in Punjab and overseas.
By now, Sargun had booked her space in the heart's of the Punjabi audience. In 2017, she starred opposite two of the most popular names in the Punjabi cinema, Jimmy Sheirgill and Neeru Bajwa, in Navaniat Singh's 'Jindua'. The movie received mixed reviews, but Saggi did the exact same of what Dhann Kaur and Jessica Brar had done for Sargun Mehta in the past.
'Lahoriye', Amberdeep Singh's directorial venture, saw Amrinder Gill and Sargun Mehta romancing in an across-the-border love story. Sargun played the role of Ameeran, a Pakistani girl, and proved as to why she was the most felicitous pick for that role. Her smoothness with the Pakistani accent, her naturalness in her craft and the grace with which she donned the sharara suit were the highlights of the movie. Needless to say, the movie was an astounding hit.
It would be unfair on my part to complete this feature without mentioning about Ammy Virk's 'Qismat', which ruled the playlists last year. In what was her maiden appearance in a Punjabi music video, Sargun featured in Qismat last July and ended up gaining unbridled approbation for the same. She repeated the success in Gurdas Maan's 'Mittar Pyaare Nu' later in that year.
At the moment, Sargun Mehta is shooting for Jagdeep Sidhu's directorial debut, 'Qismat'. She is playing the lead role in the movie opposite Ammy Virk. The movie will hit the big screens on September 21 this year. Her fans would have already started the countdown for they will get another chance to watch Sargun on-screen. The kind of Hit-Machine that she has been so far, the Punjabi industry, as a whole, would be waiting for Qismat to release.
On behalf of the whole team of Punjabi Mania, here is wishing Sargun loads of luck for Qismat and all her other upcoming projects.
