The Supreme Court has expressed deep concern over the easy accessibility of obscene content to children via OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Alt Balaji. Taking serious note of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the court on Monday issued notices to these digital content providers.
Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the petitioners, stressed that the intent behind the PIL was genuine, citing examples of explicit content readily available online.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, supporting the concerns, said that "children today are more adept at technology" and that the nature of some programs was "perverse." He added that although current regulations exist, additional frameworks are under active consideration.
Justice Gavai remarked that platforms like Netflix also have a "social responsibility" and indicated that stronger legislative action might be needed to address the issue. The matter will now proceed with inputs sought from all parties involved.
