Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation Steps In to Rebuild Lives in Flood-Hit Amritsar, Adopts 500 Families

In a heartfelt humanitarian gesture, Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation has pledged to adopt 500 homes devastated by recent floods in Punjab’s Amritsar district. The initiative aims to support families whose lives were uprooted by the overflowing Ravi River, which left entire villages submerged and thousands displaced.

The Meer Foundation, widely recognized for its work with acid attack survivors, is now turning its focus to flood recovery efforts in northern India. Partnering with the Amritsar-based NGO "Voice of Amritsar" (VOA), the Foundation will help rebuild and provide essential household items to those most severely impacted.

“When Meer Foundation reached out, they were specifically looking for credible, on-ground partners to assist in localised relief work,” said Seenu Arora, founding member of VOA. “They were immediately on board with our proposal to assist flood-hit families living along the Ravi River.”

Two Villages Selected for Initial Phase

While five flood-affected villages were initially considered, the project will begin in the two worst-affected areas. The relief plan includes not just infrastructure repair but also providing families with daily-use essentials such as beds, mattresses, gas stoves, ceiling fans, and water purification systems—items that were washed away or damaged during the floods.

Many of the families in these riverside villages have lost not only their homes but also personal belongings, livestock, and means of livelihood. With no formal shelter schemes currently in place, the collaboration between Meer Foundation and VOA comes as a beacon of hope for hundreds of struggling households.

Ground-Level Relief, Not Just Donations

Unlike one-off aid deliveries, the partnership focuses on sustained engagement at the village level. VOA will coordinate logistics, assessments, and distribution, while Meer Foundation will fund the acquisition and delivery of goods, and support temporary rehabilitation structures where necessary.

“It’s not just about donation—it's about dignified restoration of life after disaster,” said Arora, emphasizing the need for long-term assistance beyond immediate relief.

Building Back With Dignity

The move has been widely appreciated in Punjab, with local leaders and residents welcoming the involvement of the star-led foundation. This isn't the first time Shah Rukh Khan has quietly supported social causes—his foundation has been active in disaster response, health support, and women’s empowerment across the country.
