Chandigarh: A request for heightened security for the family of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala has been sent to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with a Supreme Court and Punjab and Haryana High Court advocate seeking Z+ category protection for the singer’s parents and his younger brother.

Vasu Ranjan, chairman of the Council of Lawyers, has written to the Union Home Minister, expressing concern over the family’s safety and calling for an urgent threat assessment by the relevant intelligence agencies.

In his letter, Ranjan referred to the murder of Sidhu Moosewala on May 29, 2022, allegedly carried out by members of a criminal network. He argued that the family’s security should be reviewed in light of potential threats from gangsters and other criminal elements.

Video From Canada Triggers Security Concerns

The advocate’s request follows his viewing of a video circulating on social media that reportedly showed a minor boy, described as Moosewala’s younger brother, on a stage in Canada.

According to Ranjan, the child’s appearance, mannerisms and style bear a resemblance to those of the late singer. He expressed apprehension that the growing public attention surrounding the child and the Moosewala family’s legacy could expose them to potential risks.

These concerns have been raised by the advocate in his representation to the Centre. The alleged threat, however, has not been independently established in the information provided.

Z+ Protection Sought for Parents and Child

Ranjan has requested that Balkaur Singh and Charan Kaur, Moosewala’s parents, along with their minor son, be considered for Z+ category security.

He has also called for security and intelligence agencies to conduct an immediate assessment of the family’s threat perception before deciding on the appropriate protective arrangements.

The request is intended to prompt preventive action rather than wait for any potential security incident, according to the concerns outlined in the letter.

Security Decision Awaits Official Assessment

The demand places the family’s protection back in focus following the singer’s killing in 2022. However, a request for enhanced security does not itself mean that Z+ protection has been approved.

Any decision on the level of security would depend on the assessment of the competent authorities and the findings of the relevant agencies.

No confirmation of a meeting between the family and Amit Shah, or of any approval of the requested security cover, was included in the information provided.

The matter now centres on whether the authorities will review the representation and determine what level of protection may be appropriate for the family.
