Sonam Bajwa Urges Punjab Government to Adopt Humane Approach on Stray Dog Issue

Punjabi film actor Sonam Bajwa has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure that any action taken regarding stray dogs in the state remains humane and compassionate, stressing that public safety and animal welfare must go hand in hand.

In a strongly worded statement, the actress expressed concern over reports suggesting strict action against stray dogs, clarifying that the Supreme Court had not called for the large-scale elimination of animals. She stated that the court had instead spoken about regulated management in sensitive public areas through sterilisation, vaccination, and proper shelter facilities.

Questioning the authorities' preparedness, Bajwa asked where the required shelters and infrastructure were in place before such measures were implemented. She warned that without proper systems, any aggressive action could effectively turn into a “death sentence” for helpless animals.

The actor acknowledged the importance of public safety and the need to protect human lives, but maintained that compassion and accountability should remain central to any policy decision. She urged the Punjab government to reconsider any harsh approach and instead focus on long-term, humane solutions.

Bajwa also called on the state administration to involve animal welfare organisations, veterinarians, civic authorities, and public safety experts in discussions to create a balanced and practical strategy for handling the stray dog issue.

Emphasising society's moral responsibility toward animals, she said that the way people treat voiceless creatures reflects the values and character of the community as a whole.

Her statement has sparked fresh discussion on social media over the growing stray dog issue in urban areas and the need to strike a balance between public concerns and animal rights.
