Spiritual Figure Questions KKR’s Recruitment of Bangladeshi Cricketer, Targets Shah Rukh Khan

A fresh controversy has emerged around the Indian Premier League after prominent Hindu seer Jagadguru Rambhadracharya voiced strong objections to the Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to recruit a Bangladeshi player for the next season. The remarks were directed at Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, who is a co-owner of the IPL franchise.

Speaking to PTI Videos in Nagpur on Thursday, Rambhadracharya criticised KKR’s move to sign Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman for the 2026 edition of the tournament. He described the decision as inappropriate in light of reports alleging violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, and questioned the intent behind such a choice.

The religious leader accused Shah Rukh Khan of showing what he called a lack of national commitment, arguing that sporting decisions cannot be viewed in isolation from regional and humanitarian concerns. He stressed that incidents involving minority communities in neighbouring countries should not be overlooked for commercial or professional considerations.

Rambhadracharya also called on the Indian government to respond firmly to developments in Bangladesh, urging authorities to raise concerns through diplomatic channels. He said the history of Bangladesh’s formation, including the role played by Hindus, should be clearly acknowledged by its leadership and people.

So far, there has been no official reaction from Shah Rukh Khan or the KKR management to the comments. The franchise’s acquisition of Mustafizur Rahman follows standard IPL procedures, and the fast bowler has previously played in the league for other teams.

The episode has reignited discussion around the intersection of sports, politics and religion, highlighting how decisions in professional leagues can quickly become entangled in broader regional and ideological debates.
