Sui - Maqboolpura Files is keeping much of its plot under wraps, but its makers have disclosed one important part of the journey: they say nearly two years of research came before the Punjabi feature reached its current production stage. That process—not a release date or a full character reveal—is the clearest early indication of how writer-director Abhinav Thakur intends to approach the film’s sensitive real-world subject.
In an announcement carried by The Bollywood Times, Trisha Studios said the team studied documents, personal accounts and differing perspectives connected with the subject. The makers also said they interacted with administrative officials, journalists, lawyers, public figures and people closely familiar with the circumstances being explored.
Those are the production’s claims about its method, rather than independent confirmation of any underlying historical account. Even so, they establish the creative promise the finished film will eventually have to meet: converting a large body of testimony and documentation into a human narrative without flattening the people at its centre into symbols of a social issue.
The process is clearer than the plot
Thakur is credited as both writer and director, while Tilok Kothari is producing the film. Kiran Shergill has been announced in a leading role, though the production has not yet disclosed the full identity or journey of her character. Several other characters and major storyline details are also being reserved for later announcements.
The makers currently describe the film as centring women and families whose experiences have received limited wider attention. They say the narrative will also draw on the perspectives of people who witnessed the surrounding circumstances, raised questions or tried to bring greater attention to them. Until more story material emerges, that remains a statement of creative intent rather than a complete map of the film.
The announced technical team includes director of photography Suman Sahu, editor Sanjay Sankla, production designer Tapish Soni and costume designer Nitasha Bhateja. Abhilekh Lal is composing the background music, while Vikramjit Shergill is associated with the project as executive producer. Trisha Studios is also handling post-production.
That breadth of named collaborators shows that Sui - Maqboolpura Files has moved beyond a bare premise, even if the public campaign remains deliberately limited. The research claim is therefore most useful as a window into the team’s preparation, not as a substitute for seeing how those sources, voices and competing perspectives are ultimately handled on screen.
The project is currently described as moving through production and post-production. No release date has been announced, and fuller cast and storyline details are still to come. The next meaningful step will be the material that shows how two years of research have shaped the film’s characters—especially the leading role being carried by Kiran Shergill.
