Supreme Court Directs Comedians to Host Monthly Shows Highlighting Disability Rights

0% Liked

In an unusual but widely welcomed move, the Supreme Court has asked comedian Samay Raina and four others to hold two shows each month that spotlight people with disabilities. The directive comes in the aftermath of a January 2024 livestreamed roast, during which the performers were seen making remarks aimed at visually impaired chess players, including internationally acclaimed blind chess champion Soundarya Pradhan.

The livestream triggered strong criticism from disability advocacy groups, many of whom argued that the jokes normalised prejudice and trivialised the struggles of visually impaired sportspersons. A petition filed soon after pushed the issue into the courtroom, leading the bench to pursue an alternative path instead of traditional punitive measures.

Under the court’s instructions, the comedians must now use their digital reach and influence to host conversations with differently-abled achievers, feature personal narratives of resilience, and help raise financial support for individuals dealing with rare or severe disabilities. These programmes are expected to be public, regular, and aimed at amplifying voices that often go unheard.

Describing the measure as a “social responsibility rather than a sentence,” the court underlined that its intention was to foster understanding and respect. The focus, the bench emphasised, is not retribution but creating a platform that promotes dignity, inclusion, and meaningful representation for persons with disabilities.
