BBC Sidhu Moosewala Documentary: The BBC World Service has come under fire for releasing a controversial two-part documentary on Sidhu Moose Wala, titled “The Killing Call”, on YouTube — despite pleas from the singer’s family to postpone or block the film.
The release, made public on June 11, drew intense criticism from fans and Moose Wala’s father, Balkaur Singh, who filed a court petition in Punjab’s Mansa district just a day earlier. The petition sought a legal injunction against the screening, citing emotional distress and lack of consent. The court is set to hear the matter on June 12.
The documentary features never-before-seen footage, testimonies from Moose Wala’s friends, and even an audio conversation with Goldy Brar, the gangster alleged to have orchestrated the artist’s murder. It claims to explore the international dimensions of the case, spanning Punjab, Canada, and beyond.
In a statement accompanying the film, the BBC described it as a deep investigation into the murder and legacy of one of India’s most controversial music icons. “Featuring exclusive access… and previously unseen archive material,” the BBC wrote, “the film includes voices speaking publicly for the first time.”
Originally scheduled for a screening at a Mumbai theatre, the plan was scrapped following a police complaint in Juhu, and the BBC opted instead for a direct YouTube release. Balkaur Singh said, “We had informed authorities, yet they went ahead without our permission. This isn’t just hurtful — it’s a violation.”
Critics have accused the BBC of capitalizing on grief and releasing the film just hours before the launch of Moose Wala’s posthumous EP, “Moose Print”, undermining the family’s tribute. Supporters on social media echoed similar sentiments, urging the broadcaster to take down the film until the legal proceedings are complete.
Despite the outrage, the documentary is already gathering significant attention online, reigniting public debate over Moose Wala’s legacy, his associations, and the open questions that still haunt his case.
