Acclaimed Indian singer and actor Zubeen Garg has tragically passed away at the age of 52 following a scuba diving accident in Singapore. The beloved Assamese artist was visiting the country to perform at the upcoming North East India Festival, which was scheduled for September 20 and 21.
According to festival organizers, Garg encountered respiratory distress during a diving session and was quickly pulled from the water. Despite immediate CPR and emergency medical attention, he was later pronounced dead at Singapore General Hospital. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM IST.
Confirming the news, Anuj Kumar Boruah, a representative from the North East India Festival, said: “Zubeen experienced difficulty breathing while scuba diving. Though CPR was administered promptly and he was rushed to the hospital, he unfortunately did not survive.”
A Multi-Faceted Icon
Zubeen Garg was widely celebrated for his versatility as a playback singer, composer, actor, and filmmaker. With a career spanning decades, he lent his voice to numerous songs in Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali, and earned nationwide fame with the hit track “Ya Ali” from the 2006 film Gangster. Other popular numbers included “Dil Tu Hi Bataa” from Krrish 3.
Beyond his musical talent, Garg also made a mark in Assamese cinema. His directorial ventures such as Kanchanjunga, Mission China, Dinabandhu, and Mon Jai were both commercially successful and critically acclaimed.
In 2022, the singer had suffered a minor head injury after a fall at a Dibrugarh resort. He was briefly unconscious and later flown to Guwahati for treatment. Fans had hoped that the incident was just a temporary setback in an otherwise dynamic career.
