Anurag Singh’s Yaar Anmulle when released in 2011 set the trend of what was to come for many years in Punjabi Cinema. The film featured rank new comers and went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2011 and 5 years down the line, the film has gone on to attain the cult status among cinema lovers.

Suddenly, few days ago an announcement took me by surprise.  The 1st look of Yaar Anmulle 2 was released. The film had 3 actors or wait singer turned actors. The first look did not impress me at all. Now the trailer of the film has also arrived last night. The trailer never gives an impression or a hint of what the story is. A sequence of 2 seems lifted from 3 idiots whereas the rest of the trailer was about funny gags, slapstick comedy & so on.

I felt bad for the team of the original. I felt bad for the writer-director of the of the original. I felt bad for all the actors who were a part of the original. I felt bad for the musicians & singers of the original. Everybody on that team who worked hard to make that film what it is today. This trailer did not seem to have a story, good music, actors did not know what they were doing & so on.

Just because a film has worked, does not mean that the producers have got the right to use the same title as a brand name, add a 2 or a 3 in front of it and imagine the crowds lining up outside the theatres to watch the film of the same brand they loved 5 years ago. I loved Yaar Anmulle when it released 5 years ago. I remember watching it 4 times in the cinema hall, last time with a cousin from America who so wanted to watch the film in it’s 5th week and we had a hall which was more that half occupied. That’s when you know people have loved the film & accepted it.

Now, come December 23rd, theatres will be occupied, lines will be there, people will come to the theatres to watch a film but I am afraid that the film they will end up watching will not be Yaar Anmulle 2. If the makers do not know, let me remind then that there’s a bollywood biggie opening on December 23 with a banner like Disney, an actor like Aamir Khan and the title is DANGAL. I will watch Yaar Anmulle 2 as well as I have to review the film for all of you out there. So All the Best to the makers.
