In a year which has seen the industry evolving, picking the best films is no mean task. Upon dissecting the 62 films made this year, we believe the below mentioned six films are the pick of the lot.

(The list is mentioned in the order of Release Dates)

Best Punjabi Films of 2019

Uda Aida

Released on February 1, Uda Aida highlighted the importance of one’s mother tongue and how efforts should be made to preserve it. Angrezi sikho, par Punjabi na bhullo [Speak English but don’t forget Punjabi],” a dialogue from the movie not just sums up the movie but also gives a significant learning to people in real life.

Written by Naresh Kathooria, directed by Ksshitij Chaudhary and produced by Rrupaali Gupta, Deepak Gupta, Ksshitij Chaudhary and Naresh Kathooria, the movie will be remembered as an exemplary effort when it comes to making a movie on societal lines.

Ardaas Karaan

Released on July 19, Ardaas Karaan‘ broadened the horizons of human beings especially when it came to dealing with family and relations. Written by Gippy Grewal and Rana Ranbir and directed and produced by Grewal himself, Ardaas Karaan entered the elite but brief list of Punjabi films which received both critical and commercial acclamation in abundance.

Comprising of an ensemble cast, a self-help and poignant Ardaas Karaan was successful in bringing audiences into tears on not one but many occasions in the movie irrespective of where it was being watched. Made with outright truthfulness, Ardaas Karaan was accepted gleefully for putting perspectives at the helm.

Chal Mera Putt

Released on July 26, ‘Chal Mera Putt’ put on display the heart-rending story of immigrants in England. The lively spirit of “Punjabi” immigrants from both sides of the border saw them in high spirits despite facing stern challenges.

An absolute blockbuster overseas, students living in foreign countries connected to Chal Mera Putt in a second to none manner. While the movie marked the directorial debut of Janjot Singh, it was written by Rakesh Dhawan and produced by Karaj Gill and Ashu Munish Sahni.

Sikander 2

Released on August 2, ‘Sikander 2’ surprised the Punjabi audiences who received a rare chance of watching three praiseworthy movies in three consecutive weeks.

A sequel to the 2013-release ‘Sikander’, Sikander 2 emerged as a dark horse which impressed viewers across departments. The movie was arguably the first Punjabi movie to be converted into a true-blue sequel. Right from the essence to the characters in the movie, Sikander 2 stood tall on many fronts.

The convincing manner in which the movie was made has surely given an opportunity to the makers to start working on the third part now. Written by Dheeraj Rattan and directed Manav Shah, Sikander 2 was produced by Khushwinder Parmar, KV Dhillon, Swapan Monga, Anmol Monga, Vipan Gill and Balkar Bhullar.

Ardab Mutiyaran

Released on October 18, Ardab Mutiyaran‘ was a laudable attempt of showing a story from an uncommon yet vital outlook. For a Punjabi movie to not just attempt but successfully deliver something contradicting in such a successful manner is sure an outright triumph.

Produced by Gunbir Singh Sihdu and Manmord Sidhu, Ardab Mutiyaran will be among the first names in the chapter of female-oriented movies in the biography of the Punjabi film industry. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Sonam Bajwa playing the role of Babbu Bains went down as her best performance till date.

Much like Sikander 2, Ardab Mutiyaran was also written and directed by Dheeraj Rattan and Manav Shah respectively. The pair delivering two contrasting subjects within two and a half months speaks highly about the year that they had.

Jhalle

Talking about contrast, Amarjit Singh Saron’s ‘Jhalle’ managed to sneak into a whole new territory as far as Punjabi movies are concerned.

Based on the adorable love story of two specially-abled people, Jhalle was an eye-witness to mind-blowing performances from its protagonists in Binnu Dhillon and Sargun Mehta. From the acting to the supreme quality in which DOP Ravi Kumar Sana shot the movie to its nonpareil background music, Jhalle often gave glimpses of not belonging to the Punjabi film industry.

Honourable mentions – Rabb Da Radio 2‘, ‘Muklawa‘, ‘DSP Dev‘, ‘Surkhi Bindi’ and ‘Mitran Nu Shaunk Hathyaran Da’.
