Punjabi music icon and global entertainer Diljit Dosanjh charmed fans and Grammy officials alike as he shared the stage with Recording Academy/Grammys President Panos A. Panay during a special session held at TIFF Lightbox in Toronto. What stole the spotlight wasn’t just Diljit’s stellar career highlights or global collaborations, but his endearing attempt to speak in English on stage, a move that brought smiles and thunderous applause from the audience.
Known for staying true to his Punjabi roots, Diljit ventured into English during the candid conversation. Pausing occasionally to search for words, his heartfelt effort and humility earned admiration from the crowd and even from the Grammy chief himself.
“Like the Sun Shines on Its Own…”
Reflecting on his journey and global fame, Diljit said, “I don’t feel any pressure. I feel everything is happening on its own... Like the sun shines on its own, the Earth is moving on its own, our heart is beating on its own... We don’t have any control over our breath, but still we think that we have control over it... So, I don’t take any pressure.” His poetic musings struck a chord with the audience, showcasing the philosophical depth behind the artist’s relaxed persona.
He light-heartedly added, “People say number one this and that... I like number one, that is my lucky number.”
As the discussion turned to his global collaborations, Panay asked about Diljit’s work with Sia, Ed Sheeran, and a now-famous rumored car ride with Shakira.
With his signature humor, Diljit responded with a laugh, “Hips don’t lie.” He added, “Shakira invited me on her tour. She has suggested I make an Indian version of ‘Hips Don’t Lie’.” The crowd roared with laughter and applause, thoroughly enjoying the unexpected revelation.
