The court has ordered the release of a film on contemporary tragedy that is based on the terrible actual story of Jaswinder "Jassi" Kaur and Sukhwinder "Mithu" Singh Sidhu and is told in a Punjabi folk manner. The 2023 TIFF Platform Award was unanimously given to the movie that was billed as a love story but also contained graphic violence and murder. The Toronto Film Festival, or TIFF, is where a lot of movies get their big-screen debuts.
The movie's rights are a topic of discussion right now. The movie will reportedly be made by Dream Reality, according to reports. But as of right now, they didn’t get any chance to make it, thus Dreamreality movies' producer made a statement in court to have a stay on release of Dear Jassi.
Senior advocate PPS chahal appeared on behalf of Dreamreality movies and submitted that M/s Dreamreality movies has prior assignment rights of the biopic of Jassi Sidhu and nobody else has the rights to produce any movie involving the name and story of Jassi.
Regarding the movie Dear Jassi, in 1996 Punjab, India, Canadian-born Jassi (Pavia Sidhu), a rickshaw driver below her socioeconomic position, falls in love with Mithu (Yugam Sood). Although their attraction is undeniable and unrestricted, it must contend with Punjabi society and Jassi's family's rules.
The movie was directed by Tarsem Singh, who shot his debut movie in India. For some of the plot points, he drew inspiration from his own late mother and pondered why a Canadian lady with Indian ancestry would want to kidnap and kill her daughter.
