Popular singer and rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh backed out of a scheduled performance at the Filmfare Awards in Mohali on August 23, citing security concerns. The artist, who arrived at the venue but did not step on stage, reportedly withdrew after his personal security team was denied entry by the event organizers.
According to sources, Honey Singh insisted on being accompanied by his guards inside the arena, but the organizers assured him that adequate security arrangements were already in place with both private personnel and Punjab Police on duty. A prolonged exchange between the two sides ended with the singer leaving the venue gates without performing.
Meanwhile, the cancellation came against the backdrop of protests led by social activists and cultural figures opposing Honey Singh’s participation. Chandigarh-based professor Pandit Dharenwar, who has been campaigning against what he calls “obscene songs,” claimed credit for the cancellation, saying, “We did not want such performances to corrupt our young generation. We will continue to oppose any attempt to organize his shows in Punjab.”
Singer Jasbir Singh Jassi also voiced disapproval of Honey Singh’s involvement, posting on social media that the rapper’s music glamorized drugs and negatively influenced youth. Jassi had even appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene before the show.
The incident has sparked a wider debate on censorship, artistic freedom, and the influence of popular music on Punjab’s youth culture. While organizers have not issued an official statement, the abrupt exit of one of India’s most recognized performers has left the event mired in controversy.
