Synopsis
Kala Shah Kala witnesses a love triangle between its lead cast in Binnu Dhillon, Sargun Mehta and Jordan Sandhu interflowing with a social message regarding complexion. Contrary to a chunk of viewers' expectations, movies don't and shouldn't guarantee a message on the societal front. However, to fit it in a message in a jocular love story demands for approbation on the part of debutant director and writer Amarjit Singh.
The movie starts with Vicholan bhua (Nirmal Rishi) being admitted to a hospital. Known for setting up marriages for decades, bhua ironically falls ill on a marriage. It is at the hospital that she ends up reciting the love story of Pammi (Sargun Mehta), Jaggi (Jordan Sandhu) and Lovely (Binnu Dhillon) of village Kaalewal to her attendants.
Dating back to the times of VCRs, the story portrays Lovely aka Naag as a dark complexioned boy who is slammed by one and all (including his family members) because of his colour. The denunciation rises to an extent that the reason behind him not getting married is deduced to his skin colour.
In the name of hope, Lovely tries several ways to improve his skin tone but to no effect. Even Lovely's companions in Hari (Karamjit Anmol) and Jeet (Harby Sangha) try their best to provide aid but to minimal results. Eventually, it is the bhua which comes to Lovely's rescue. Fixing his marriage with Pammi (Sargun Mehta), who loves Jaggi (Jordan Sandhu), further improves her professional reputation but creates a colossal problem for protagonists.

Stands tall on comic lines
What keeps the audiences engrossed in the movie is it being utterly high on comical lines, chiefly in the first half. While all the actors are at their best during the comic sequences, Rakesh Dhawan's dialogues provide a pinpoint assistance when it comes to tickling the audiences.
Lovely's father, Bhajan Singh (played by Gurmeet Saajan) and Pammi's father, Jora Singh played by (BN Sharma) both add well to the jocularity. All in all, it wouldn't be wrong to say that comedy is the focal point of the movie and is something because of which the movie can be watched.
That being said, a facet where Amarjit Singh lacks behind is carrying the movie from the interval to its climax. Like many other Punjabi movies, Kala Shah Kala also becomes a victim of elongated and forced wedding sequences and songs. However, it is the comic elements which absorbs the attention of the audiences.
Being a period movie, Kala Shah Kala also failed, at times, to convince the audiences about its time period. While Mehta's captivating suits and makeup undoubtedly add to her beauty, it doesn't go well with the time period on diaply. Even Rishi's appearance after plentiful years in the hospital contradicts ageing.
Acting
Talking about the actors in the movie, Dhillon puts in another praiseworthy performance as a lead actor. As mentioned earlier, agreeing for such a role must have taken the actor inside him overdoing the hero. Coming on the back of a blockbuster in 'Qismat', Mehta gives the impression of abundant success not affecting her craft by a whisker. The pinnacle of her role came during the emotional sequences in the climax, something which she appears to be doing exceedingly well in her earlier movies as well.
Playing the role of Mehta's friend 'Taaro' in the movie, Shehnaz Gill makes an outstanding debut. Still into early days of his acting career, Sandhu does well. It is worth mentioning that both of them have it in them to be looked forward in their next projects.
One has to throw accolades at the casting team for bringing on board some suitable actors for roles which weren't lengthy but were impact-generating. Veteran Jatinder Kaur, who plays the role of Mehta's grandmother in the movie, will convulse you into laughter on many occasions. With the help of Randeep Singh (Sumo driver), Ashok Pathak (waiter) and Honey Mattu (cobbler), Kala Shah Kala engrosses the attention of viewers through its supporting cast.
Watch Kala Shah Kala for it will offer you an opportunity to laugh wholeheartedly and continually. With the movie also delivering on endemic lines, it is an addition which is most likely to resonate with the audiences and perhaps give them a fitting message.
