Lover Movie Review

'Lover' is your prototypical platter of filmy romance, masala and entertainment. Just like how an actor defines his/her movie by talking about its all-inclusive features, Lover also comprises of all the ingredients to make for what is essentially an applaudable romantic flick.

The 135-minute long movie encompasses of a teenage romance, lead pair supported by best friends, a typical villain, a helpless mother, economic divide betweent two families and most importantly twists which carry the plot forward.

Lalli (Guri) and Heer (Ronak Joshi) are science and arts students in a Patiala school respectively. Lalli, who develops feelings for Heer, follows a fixed routine for four long years to catch her attention. His hard work eventualy pays off as Heer also falls for Lalli.

What follows is a silly but innocent love sequence, something which you would expect from two teenagers. Students of different classes, Lalli and Heer come about with their own adorable, innovating and risk-involving ways of stepping out with each other including chatting with the help of lights from their individual terraces at night.

It is at this point in time of a blossoming romance that the entry of Heer's uncle Dilawar Singh (Yashpal Sharma), an ominous businessman fond of illegal methods, plays spoilsport in their love story.

Into their third and first movie respectively, Guri and Joshi emerge as the pinnacle of Lover. Their acting successfully manages to prove their lack of mallice both when they are with and without each other. Joshi, in particular, registers a confident and assured debut with her screen presence.

That said, it would be unfair to not give a special mention to Guri. With the singer-turned-actor not letting down expectations since his debut movie in 'Sikander 2(2019), Guri puts on display quite a show in Lover. With a lot riding on him in a movie primarily based on his character, Guri stands tall on his potential to justify his casting. Honestly speaking, it would be interesting to see how the industry perceives him as an actor post Lover and what he opts to do after such a compelling act.

Another victory for Lover lies in its music. While the same had already been demostrated on the back of listening to the music album, the situations when these songs are played work like icing on the cake in the movie.

Written by Taj, the script is passable and convincing especially with respect to what happens after the lovers are caught by Dilawar. Directed by Dilsher Singh and Khushpal Singh as their third movie together, the duo continue to make progress regarding their filmography. An earnest effort in Lover will go down as them brushing up their skills on the back of an improved performance.
