Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham’ (2011) changed the canvas and expectations of cop movies in Bollywood to a large extent. The sequel to the same was released in 2014 and did even better. Five years down the line, the movie has been officially remade in Punjabi and is set to hit the silver screens tomorrow (August 9).
The trailer of Punjabi Singham was released on the official YouTube channel of T-Series more than a month ago. At the time of writing this article, the trailer has received in excess of 3.5 million views on the same platform.

Parmish Verma, who has a massive fan-following in Punjab, is playing the role of ‘Singham’ in the movie. Sonam Bajwa, who has already featured in a couple of super-hit Punjabi movies this year, is playing the lead opposite Verma. Kartar Cheema, who as recent as last week has delivered a magnificent performance in ‘Sikander 2’, will be seen playing the villain in Singham.

Singham has been directed by Navaniat Singh, a tried and tested name in the Punjabi industry. The screenplay and dialogues have been written by Dheeraj Rattan. With the duo having worked together on several occasions in the past, expect them to deliver a successful project.
As far as the plot is concerned, it is said to be at a minor contrast from the Hindi movie. Having said that, the essence and the primary characteristics of the protagonist is likely to remain the same. Whether Punjabi Singham will create a similar impact on the audiences (like the Hindi Singham) will be known after watching the movie in cinema halls tomorrow.
Singham has been produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak under the banners of Gulshan Kumar, T-Series, Ajay Devgn and Panorama Studios. The movie has been distributed by Panorama Studios and Omjee Studios.
While Singham might receive some competition at the box-office from Prashant Singh’s Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra-starer ‘Jabariya Jodi’, it will have to be careful from holdover Punjabi releases like Sikander 2 and ‘Chal Mera Putt’ (in overseas centres).
