Mumbai’s popular comedian and television host Kapil Sharma faced a shocking ordeal last week when he allegedly received extortion threats demanding Rs 1 crore, along with death warnings. According to officials, the calls and video messages were sent between September 22 and 23.
The accused, identified as Dilip Chaudhary, reportedly used the names of known gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar while issuing the threats. Acting swiftly, the Mumbai Crime Branch traced Chaudhary to West Bengal, where he was arrested and subsequently brought back to Mumbai.
On being produced before the court, investigators secured his custody till September 30 to probe the case further. Officials are now examining the motive behind the extortion attempt and whether any larger network is linked to the incident.
Sharma, who enjoys massive popularity across India and abroad, has yet to issue a public statement on the matter. Meanwhile, the incident has raised concerns about the growing trend of high-profile personalities being targeted by criminal syndicates for extortion.
