Chandigarh: Popular Punjabi singer Karan Aujla has said that he feels safer in Punjab than in Canada, citing repeated firing incidents at his home overseas. In a recent interview on a YouTube channel, the singer revealed that he decided to leave Canada for Dubai, as he felt that even staying indoors offered no protection there.
Aujla said that his house in Canada was targeted with gunfire on at least six occasions, the first time being in 2019. “Twice, the firing was linked to extortion demands. I was told not to perform shows in Punjab or even come to India unless I paid up. I refused. After that, bullets kept coming,” he said.
The singer explained that the wooden houses in Canada made the situation even more dangerous. “Bullets can tear through the walls. Once, while I was sleeping, a bullet passed through my window. Even if the police try their best, they can’t prevent such incidents when someone fires dozens of rounds at night and vanishes. That’s when I realized it wasn’t safe for me or my family,” he added.
Citing personal responsibilities, Aujla said his decision was driven by concern for his loved ones. “I have my wife and sisters to look after. When bullets are fired, no one will stop to ask how they are doing. Courage alone is not enough—sometimes you have to use your mind too,” he remarked.
‘Punjab Feels Safer’
When asked if he worries about his security while in Punjab, Aujla admitted there are concerns but credited the Punjab government for offering protection. “I feel more secure here than in Canada. I cannot live away from my village for long. Dubai feels closer, and Punjab is just a two-hour flight away,” he said.
Recalling his early journey, Aujla shared that after gaining recognition, he performed in Delhi and Chandigarh before returning to Punjab. “I started singing at Kabaddi and football tournaments. People gathered in large numbers, and that’s where I connected with them by saying, ‘I belong here,’” he said.
Apology Over Controversial Song
Apart from security concerns, Aujla recently faced controversy over his track “MF Gabru”. The Punjab Women’s Commission took note of the song, alleging that it disrespected women. Following the summons, the singer appeared before the panel and issued an apology, acknowledging the concerns raised.
