Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, one of Indian cinema’s most respected character actors, passed away on Monday at the age of 91. He had been undergoing treatment at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he succumbed to health complications. His last rites will be performed on August 19 in Thane.
Potdar’s passing leaves behind a legacy that spanned more than four decades and over 125 films, in addition to a prolific television career. Known for effortlessly slipping into diverse roles, he balanced critically acclaimed films such as Aakrosh and Ardh Satya with commercial blockbusters like Dilwale, Rangeela, Vaastav, Parineeta, and Dabangg 2.
The Iconic "Professor"
While his filmography was vast, younger audiences remember him most for his role as a stern professor in 3 Idiots. His dialogue, “Arey, kehna kya chahte ho?”, became a lasting cultural reference, still quoted widely in everyday conversations and online memes.
Beyond the Screen
Before entering films, Potdar lived a multi-faceted life. He served in the Indian Army, retiring as a captain in 1967, and later worked with Indian Oil Corporation for nearly 25 years before taking retirement at 58. A professor in his early years, he eventually followed his passion for acting at the age of 44 — a leap that brought him nationwide recognition.
He also made an impact on television with roles in Bharat Ek Khoj, Pradhan Mantri, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Aahat, and the Marathi series Majha Hoshil Na.
