Actor Aamir Khan has responded to the controversy surrounding his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt, dismissing allegations of “love jihad” and clarifying that none of his marriages involved religious conversion.
Aamir, who entered into a civil marriage with Gauri Spratt on July 5 under the Special Marriage Act, said all his marriages—including those with Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao—were solemnised through civil unions. He stressed that none of his wives converted their faith for marriage.
The actor also clarified that Gauri Spratt is a Christian and not a Hindu, adding that she is not a practising Christian either. His remarks were aimed at countering speculation and misinformation circulating on social media following news of their marriage.
The controversy intensified after Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane and members of the Bajrang Dal described the marriage as an instance of “love jihad.” At the same time, Islamic cleric Maulana Ibrahim Hussain reportedly issued a fatwa, calling the marriage impermissible under Islamic law without religious conversion.
Reacting to criticism from both sides, Aamir said the situation had become ironic, pointing to the diversity within his own family. He noted that his sisters and daughter are married to Hindus, while one of his cousins is married to a Christian, underscoring that interfaith relationships have long been a part of his family.
With his statement, Aamir sought to put an end to the speculation, reiterating that his marriage to Gauri Spratt was conducted legally under the Special Marriage Act and did not require either partner to change their religion.
