The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, has issued a directive prohibiting film promotions and videography within the sacred premises of Sri Darbar Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar. This decision underscores the need to maintain the sanctity and spiritual atmosphere of one of the holiest sites in Sikhism.
The Akal Takht's decision is rooted in preserving the sacred environment of the Golden Temple. The institution emphasizes that the primary purpose of the temple is spiritual worship and devotion, and activities that may commercialize or disrupt this sanctity are not permissible. The directive aims to ensure that the focus remains on the religious and spiritual experiences of the devotees.
There has been growing concern among the Sikh community about the increasing trend of using religious sites for commercial purposes, including film promotions and shooting music videos. The Akal Takht has received numerous complaints from devotees who felt that such activities were disrespectful and detracted from the solemnity of the site. By banning these activities, the Akal Takht seeks to prevent any form of commercialization within the sacred premises.
This ban will impact the film and entertainment industry, which often seeks picturesque and culturally significant locations for shoots. Filmmakers and artists will now need to seek alternative locations for their projects. While this may pose challenges, the directive reinforces the importance of respecting religious sentiments and maintaining the sanctity of sacred sites.
