In a major relief for popular Punjabi singers Ammy Virk, Sukh E, and lyricist Arshad Ali, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the summons issued against them by the Mohali Trial Court in a copyright dispute.
The case pertains to the song 'Darshan' sung by Ammy Virk, which has now become the center of a legal controversy. The Mohali Trial Court had earlier issued summons to the trio on February 14, 2025, directing them to appear before the court on August 26.
Complainant Nirmal Singh Grewal claims that he co-wrote the song 'Darshan' in 2021 along with Arshad Ali. However, according to the complaint, Arshad Ali later sold the song to Ammy Virk and Sukh E without Grewal’s consent, allegedly violating copyright laws.
Following this, Grewal filed a petition against all three individuals, accusing them of unauthorized use and distribution of his intellectual property.
Ammy Virk, Sukh E, and Arshad Ali moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court to challenge the summons, asserting that the song in question was originally penned by Sukh E and had no connection with Nirmal Singh Grewal.
Arguing that the lower court erred in summoning them without proper legal grounds, they requested the court to quash the orders.
After hearing the preliminary arguments, the High Court stayed the summons issued by the Mohali Trial Court and issued a notice to Nirmal Singh Grewal, seeking his formal response in the matter.
The stay order brings temporary relief to the artists, although the final decision will depend on the subsequent hearings and responses from both sides.
The case has garnered attention in the Punjabi music industry, especially concerning the ongoing issues around copyright, song ownership, and unauthorized content usage.
