Ardab Mutiyaran Movie Review

‘Ardab Mutiyaran’ witnesses parallel stories of two families. While the first one comprises of three brothers in Bittu Bansal (Sudesh Lehri), Sameer Bansal (Rajeev Mehra) and Rinku Bansal (Ajay Sarkaria), the second one comprises of Dr. Charanjit Ahuja (BN Sharma), his wife Sudesh Ahuja (Upasana Singh) and son Vicky Ahuja (Ninja).

It is the entrance of Babbu Bains (Sonam Bajwa) and Shruti Chadha (Mehreen Pirzada) into the Bansal and Ahuja family respectively which opposes the way proceedings are carried out in both the homes. While Babbu is strongly objected by the already existing women of Bansal family in Saroj Bansal (Cheshtha Bhagat) and Mona Bansal (Myra Singh), the same happens between Shruti and Sudesh.

In what forms the gist of the movie, it isn’t as easy as it sounds as the script adds much more to the movie. Having said that, the movie successfully breaks major barriers with respect to women and suggests how successful relationships don’t travel on a one-way road.

Much like many problems in life have simple solutions, the movie also offers solutions which are not related to rocket science but are effective in their own simple way. “Je aurat hi aurat da saath nahin dugi tan kaun duga,” asks Bittu Bansal towards the climax when is own wife is seen playing spoilsport.

Direction and writing

Directed by Manav Shah and written by Dheeraj Rattan, the movie is exceptional when it comes to portraying the nuances of two contradicting families. What further adds meat to the movie is Rakesh Dhawan’s dialogues. Him writing game-changing lines for Babbu Bains and the Bansal brothers speaks highly about his potential in this field.

Like most things in life, Ardab Mutiyaran yields best results after a given time period, i.e., in the second half. While the first half sets the plot for the viewers, it is the developments in the second half which justify the title of the movie. The successful comic elements in the second half is like icing on the cake for the audiences.

As a director, Shah not only successfully develops a sound chemistry between the two couples in Babbu and Rinku and Shruti and Vicky but also shows a praiseworthy and supportive professional bonding between Babbu and Vicky, who work in the recovery department of Chadha Finance.

Acting

There is no hiding to the fact that Sonam Bajwa single-handedly steals the show in Ardab Mutiyaran. Right from catching the refinement of a prototypical accent from the Majha area to playing a bossy Babbu Bains, Bajwa leads the sequences of transformation in the movie. The actress doesn’t look unconvincing in any frame of this offbeat intimidating version.

Into their third and second Punjabi movie respectively, both Ninja and Mehreen Pirzada put on display significant improvement as lead actors. Having registered a confident and cogent performance, debutant Ajay Sarkaria illustrates no nerves in his first movie.

Renowned comedian Sudesh Lehri leading the funny scenes in the movie tells why casting directors in the Punjabi industry have missed the chance of casting him in such roles in the last six years. Playing sister-in-laws who look down upon on Babbu Bains on several fronts, both Cheshtha Bhagat and Myra Singh also do well in playing the antagonists, so to speak.

Music

In Sidhu Moose Wala’s ‘Jatti Jeone Morh Wargi’ and Singga’s ‘Ardab Mutiyaran’, the best two songs from the movie are promotional tracks and hence are not found in the movie. Among the songs which come in the movie, Gurshabad and Gurlez Akhtar’s ‘Jattan Naal Yaarane’ is the pick of the lot.

Final verdict

Ardab Mutiyaran is a doubtlessly laudable attempt of showing a story from an uncommon yet vital perspective. As far as the recent Punjabi movies are concerned, the second half is among the best as it comprises of key learning which have it in them to improve relations within any family.

For a Punjabi movie to not just attempt but successfully deliver something contradicting in such a manner is an outright triumph.
