The release of “Hind Ki Chadar,” an animated film depicting the life of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, has been postponed following objections from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The movie, produced by Baweja Studios, was originally scheduled to release today (November 21) to coincide with the centenary celebrations of the Guru.
According to the production team, the decision came after consultation with the Akal Takht Sahib. In a formal letter to Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gadgaj, Baweja Studios requested guidance on any elements of the film that might be considered inaccurate or insensitive. The studio also announced the postponement on its social media accounts.
SGPC Highlights Concerns Over Sikh Sentiments
The film investigation committee, which had reviewed the animation, submitted its report to the Akal Takht. Sardar Kulwant Singh Mannan, Chief Secretary of the SGPC, emphasized that films portraying religious figures must carefully adhere to principles and sentiments.
“Releasing such a film at a time when the Sikh community is commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji could be seen as disrespectful. Deviations from core principles can lead to controversy,” Mannan said.
Previous Acclaim for Baweja Studios
Baweja Studios is known for producing “Chaar Sahibzaade,” another animated film on Sikh history that received widespread appreciation from the Sikh community. Both the storytelling and music of the earlier film were praised for their authenticity and cultural resonance.
The studio has indicated its readiness to work with the Akal Takht and SGPC to address concerns and make necessary revisions before scheduling a new release date.
This postponement underscores the importance of sensitivity and accuracy when portraying revered historical figures in Indian cinema.
