Synopsis

Blackia highlights the times of emergency in India when there were limited restrictions on the India-Pakistan border. It is this leniency which used to encourage people to smuggle gold from Arab nations and eventually from Pakistan to India.

The movie starts on an influential and enticing note captivating the attention of the viewers from the word go. Accompanying his father Jaggar Singh (Sanju Solanki) on the border to illegally buy gold, a young Gurnam Singh aka Gamaa (Dev Kharoud) is seen learning the tricks of the trade at an age where his mother Naseeb Kaur (Ekta Singh) urges him to concentrate on his studies.

What further holds the attention of the viewer and creates an instant impact during these intriguing scenes is Amar Mohile’s background score. Despite possessing audacious qualities like his father, prevailing circumstances witness Gamaa listening to his mother.

However, there are circumstances which force Gamaa to walk on the same path as his father. His gutsy attitude and devil-may-care approach witnesses him making a place for himself in everyone’s hearts. At the helm of the illegal business, Gaama gains the title of “Blackia” sooner rather than later.

Other than the start, what is likeable is Blackia’s rich production value. From luxury cars of those times to apt costumes, the makers have made sure that Blackia’s overall feel has the hallmark of the years gone by barring a few minor flaws here and there.

Direction and Writing

Blackia has been directed by National Award-wining director Sukhminder Dhanjal. While Dhanjal has made a comeback after seven years, the script, screenplay and dialogues have been written by rookie Inderpal Singh. A primary facet where the director has won unequivocally is the cast of the movie. Avoiding signing several tried-and-tested faces for the supporting cast of the movie has come as a refreshing change.

Dhanjal is also successful in convincing people that the story being talked about is of the periodic times. There are times in the movie when one believes that what is being portrayed on the screen belongs to the contemporary era.

An area where Dhanjal has missed a trick is not laying more emphasis on the primary feature of the movie, i.e., smuggling of gold. In what is a rare an anomalous subject for Punjabi audiences, so much could have been explored and portrayed on the silver screen.

Instead, Dhanjal’s vision and Inderpal’s writing ends up calling attention to the love story between Gaama and Sheetal (Ihana Dhillon). The same followed by the customary practice of forced songs in a Punjabi movie does affect the overall experience.

Regardless of Inderpal putting together an unconventional plot, both him and Dhanjal were found wanting during the climax. Having said that, the duo also deserves accolades for naturally creating comic scenes in the movie and aiming to leave behind a lesson for the viewers.

Acting

Giving the impression of mastering the art of playing such questionable and felonious characters, actor Dev Kharoud has once again put on display a remarkable performance. Having single-handedly dominated this genre in the Punjabi industry, Kharoud appears to rise up the ladder with every such role.

While Ihana Dhillon’s look and demeanour gave fair indications of the times she represented, her overall middle-of-the-road piece of work left viewers wanting for more. The two experienced names in Ashish Duggal (Gajjan Singh) and Rana Jung Bahadur (Lala Roshan Lal) played their parts with utmost precision. While Duggal has done negative roles in the past as well, it was gladdening to see the latter doing something other than slapstick comedy.

The duo of Ravinder Mand (Sukha) and Arsh Hundal (Billa) also made their presence felt on several occasions in the movie. As mentioned above, the trio of lesser known faces in Sanju Solanki, Naginder Gakhar (Baghel Singh) and Ekta Singh was the pinnacle of the movie. The self-assurance with which each one of them played their parts was worth the praise.

Music

Blackia encompasses a decent brand of music. But you don’t expect crime movie to be out and out well-versed with plentiful songs. Do you?

Among all the songs, Blackia’s title track sung by Himmat Sandhu (written by Gill Raunta and musically directed by Desi Crew) is the best of the lot.

Final Verdict

Director Dhanjal and actor Kharoud joining hands with each other has created an action-packed movie which is definitely worth-watching. The duo is highly likely of not letting you down in cinema halls with their uncommon project.
