The year 2017 is in its twilight. It is that time of the year when people concoct plans regarding the New Year's eve. It is that time of the year when people build new resolutions. It is also that time of the year when all métiers are scrutinised.
We, at Punjabi Mania, have covered news vis-à-vis Punjabi movies for the whole of 2017. With just a handful of days remaining in the year, we believe that this is the best time to review the performances across various spheres of activity.
Let us pick up the threads of our segment with the 'Top 5 Breakthrough Performances (Male)' of the year.
1. Ranjit Bawa (Sarvann, Bhalwan Singh) - Having made his debut on papers in Karan Guliani's 'Sarvann', Ranjit Bawa went on to feature in a total of four movies this year. His role as Amreek in Sarvann and in and as 'Bhalwan Singh' was liked in due manner by the audiences in both Punjab and overseas.
2. Tarsem Singh Jassar (Rabb Da Radio, Sardar Mohammad) - For all we know, there couldn't have been a better course of action for Tarsem Singh Jassar to enter into the field of acting than as Manjinder Singh in 'Rabb Da Radio' and in and as 'Sardar Mohammad'. There was an interval of seven months between both the movies. An upswing in his acting was palpable on the screen in this hiatus.
3. Ninja (Channa Mereya) - Already an accepted name in the Punjabi music industry, Ninja donned the actor's hat in Pankaj Batra's 'Channa Mereya' in July. He was instrumental in playing the role of 'Jagat', gaining ovation in both Punjab and overseas. For someone who enjoys a heavy and ardent fan base, praises were bound to come. Having said that, Ninja made sure that those praises were a by-product of his work and not of his image.
4. Amrit Mann (Channa Mereya) - In which was another acting debut in the movie 'Channa Mereya', Amrit Mann slayed the masses with the role of Balli Dhillon. Call him the antagonist in the movie or someone who plays a justified negative role, Mann was all guns blazing from the word go. His chemistry with his on-screen father, MLA Shamsher Singh Dhillon (Yograj Singh), was of the first order.
5. Deep Sidhu (Jora 10 Numbaria) - Deep Sidhu made his debut in 2015 but I would call 2017 as his breakthrough year. This was the year where he came into his own in terms of acting. Deep Sidhu as Jora was one of the signature performances of the year.
