Tension continues to mount within the Indo-Canadian community after gunshots were fired outside the residence of Punjabi singer Channi Nattan in Canada. The attack comes a day after the murder of Darshan Singh Sahsi, a prominent industrialist of Punjabi origin.
Authorities say no one was injured in the incident at Nattan’s home, but several windows were reportedly shattered. Police have launched an investigation and increased security around other potential targets connected to the Punjabi diaspora.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a notorious criminal organisation with international reach, has claimed responsibility for both the shooting and Sahsi’s murder. A gang member, Goldie Dhillon, posted online that Sahsi was killed because he refused to pay extortion money and allegedly had ties to the drug trade.
The Bishnoi gang, led by Lawrence Bishnoi, who has been imprisoned in India since 2014, is known for coordinating extortion, contract killings, and drug trafficking across India and abroad. Despite Bishnoi’s incarceration, the gang maintains a widespread network that operates in countries with large Punjabi populations, including Canada, the UK, and Australia.
The group rose to global attention after being linked to the 2022 assassination of singer Sidhu Moosewala and has since been designated a terrorist organisation in Canada. Law enforcement officials warn that the gang’s activities pose serious challenges due to their transnational nature and ability to target individuals overseas.
Canadian police are investigating the motive behind the shooting at Nattan’s residence, including whether it was intended as an intimidation tactic connected to extortion demands. Authorities have urged the community to remain vigilant while investigations continue.
So far, there have been no arrests in connection with either incident, and officials say the probe remains ongoing.
