Synopsis – Manpreet (Neeru Bajwa) has gained infamy as “the Runaway Bride” teaming up with her aunt (Navneet Nishan) and uncle (Jaswinder Bhalla) who con the groom’s families by tempting them to marry their daughter & run away with their entire baggage of cash and gold. Until one fine day the carefree and cheerful Manpreet falls in love with his prince charming, Ranbir (Harish Verma) who the ‘con pack’ befooled few months back.
Review – RSVP brings a new wave of freshness with it. It’s got a fantastic pair as their lead actors, story is inspired by various true events of Punjab and Bollywood’s one of the best comedian is making a debut. Aaibo song is a blockbuster. What more could you have asked from a film of this level. Well, I have the answers.
Writers Ved Prakash & Vijay Arora have very intelligently adopted an ongoing issue of hoax weddings in Punjab in a humorous manner. The first half of the film is an out and out comedy like other films but it has an element of drama and a sweet smell of romance into it. Cut to Second half, the problem starts here. The writers have probably gone fuddled of which way to carry the plot forward.
Either take it towards the romantic side, or continue it with laughs and giggles, put an element of drama & a bit of action. Well they’ve done it all in those 64 minutes. Probably this is where they’ve gone a little wrong. Screenplay in the 2nd half misses those crunch moments and becomes more than predictable. Also the plot failed to justify various points in the screenplay. Dialogues were laughable. Some were just done away with.
Director Vijay Arora, makes his debut as a director after outshining as a DoP in Bollywood having done films like ABCD, Vaastav, to name a few. Probably this is the reason, the framing of the film was outshined and that’s why Punjab especially Amritsar has never looked so beautiful on screen, not even in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Coming to the other parts, Vijay Arora has handled most moments with brilliance whereas very few lacked that spark.
Music by multiple composers is a new trend. I still don’t understand the reason behind it. If they are able to produce a music, which shall not leave the hearts of the people for a decade or so, then it’s justified. Here what I feel is that Aaibo is the best and a frontrunner for various awards next year. Channa Ve and Tu Vi Ni suited the mood of the film.
Coming to the performances, this film is one reason why Neeru Bajwa is called the ‘Queen’ of Punjabi Cinema. She looks gorgeous and to add a cherry on top, she enacts her best. Such roles are expected for women in Punjabi Cinema. They are not a mere showpiece and when given a chance can prove their worth. Harish on the other hand, al though acts well but doesn’t need to be repetitive. His last film released also revolved around a wedding but was completely different from this one.
Jaswinder Bhalla and Navneet Nishan excel as husband and wife. Bhalla is now getting repetitive, but till he acts well, it’s palatable. On the other hand, talents like Rajpal Yadav and Rana Ranbir’s presence was just around an extended guest appearance. Both act well but are underutilized. Veterans Guggu Gill and Jaswant Daman were all right. Pukhraj Bhalla was the show stealer, after Stupid 7 he gets another platform to prove his acting talent. He’s a sure shot star comedian in future, given he polishes his skills more, which I am sure he will do it.
Overall, RSVP has a comical 1st half. The plot goes haywire in the 2nd half A newer concept and technically, as expected it’s superb. Can be watched this weekend.
