Popular songs as movie titles - Marketing gimmick or lack of creativity?

Surprised to read so many movie titles without any context? Any regular follower of Punjabi songs and movies should be able to observe that these titles of movies have been derived from hook lines of popular Punjabi songs of the past.

Interestingly, one doesn't have to dive deep into history of Punjabi cinema to shortlist the aforementioned movies as each one of them has released in 2022 itself. Nothing new about the trend though but it has really picked pace in the last year or so.

What could be the reason for coming across so many movie titles which are doubtlessly famous but have nothing new about them? Can the title of a movie really decide its fortune? Is a title so influencial so as to become a blindly followed marketing gimmick? Or is it just simple lack of creativity on the part of writers/directors/makers?

Like many questions in life, even these above mentioned questions don't have a concrete answer to them. A primary reason for the same is an unmentioned Option D called "All of the Above".

It is true that someone with a marketing mindset must have thought of initiating this long-standing practice back in the day. At the time, novelty must have also reaped fruits to the extent that a one-off move ended up becoming a common routine.

With herd mentality a common trait in the showbiz, more and more producers would've wanted to follow the same pattern by suggesting catchy film titles in addition to the more poetic ones suggested by writers.

Having said that, over the years, the move has also flopped big time for even the biggest of movies. A forced title not justifying the story have made audiences realize that a well liked song might not necessarily convert into a movie worth-watching. As a result, even the list above has it in it several movies which neither worked at the box-office nor were able to form any cohesion between the script and its title.

While drifting towards the surety of an initial mileage by just changing the name of your product can be tempting for anyone, makers must not cross a line where creativity is compromised in a money minting attempt.

List of some Punjabi movies scheduled to release in 2023

'Uchiyan Ne Gallan Tere Yaar Diyan'.

'Niga Marda Aayi Ve'.

'Chal Jindiye'.

Like it or not but one thing which remains sure for now is that the trend is not going anywhere.
