The Punjab State Women’s Commission has summoned singers Yo Yo Honey Singh and Karan Aujla after concluding that some of their recent tracks contain language that undermines the dignity of women. The move comes after commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill personally reviewed the songs and found the lyrics objectionable.
Honey Singh’s Millionaire and Aujla’s MF Gabru were specifically flagged for using derogatory terms aimed at women. “We will ask them to explain the intent behind such words, and steps will be taken to prevent the circulation of these songs in the future,” Gill said, adding that a police report on the matter is expected later today.
The commission has also written to the Director General of Police, requesting the appointment of a Chandigarh-based officer to investigate the issue and recommend appropriate action. The police have been instructed to submit their findings promptly.
Both singers have been involved in controversies before. In December 2024, Aujla faced backlash for allegedly promoting alcohol during a concert in Chandigarh, an incident that reached the High Court and led to restrictions on his performance. In March 2025, Honey Singh was criticised for holding a show in Chandigarh on Martyrdom Day, a date commemorating Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, with opponents arguing that such events could negatively influence youth.
Under current law, state governments can ban songs that are seen as harmful to society or public morality. In recent years, this authority has been used to block tracks promoting gun culture or containing inflammatory content, such as Sidhu Moosewala’s SYL in Punjab and several Haryanvi songs on YouTube.
The commission’s action signals growing official intolerance toward misogynistic themes in Punjabi music, and today’s proceedings could set the tone for how the state handles similar cases in the future.
