Satish Shah, Beloved ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ Actor, Passes Away at 74 in Mumbai

Satish Shah Death: Veteran film and television actor Satish Shah, whose comic brilliance and effortless performances entertained audiences for decades, passed away on Saturday afternoon at the age of 74.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the actor breathed his last around 2:30 p.m. at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been undergoing treatment for complications related to kidney failure. Sources close to the family said Shah had recently undergone a kidney transplant, but his condition worsened over the past few days.

His manager said that Shah’s body is currently at the hospital, and his last rites will be performed on Sunday in Mumbai.

Over a career spanning more than forty years, Satish Shah built a reputation as one of Indian cinema and television’s most versatile actors. Known for seamlessly blending satire, humor, and emotion, he delivered some of the most memorable characters of the small and big screens.

His portrayal of Indravadan Sarabhai, the sarcastic yet endearing father in the hit sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, remains etched in public memory as one of the finest comedic performances on Indian television. Earlier, he gained nationwide fame through the 1980s classic Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, one of the earliest sitcoms to win mass popularity in India.

On the silver screen, Shah was a part of several landmark Hindi films, including Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), where his portrayal of a dead man in a farcical comedy remains iconic. His diverse filmography also boasts titles such as Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, DDLJ, and Om Shanti Om.
