Short films are an easy way to get entertained: Navneet Kaur Drall

Punjabi Mania interviews Navneet Kaur Drall, the director of Punjabi film Desire. Navneet shares with us her experience, inspiration and more.

Q1. Tell us about your short film desires.
Desire is a story of a teenage girl Lisa, who sells candles at a church. From her story we want to convey the message that what you see is not always the truth, there can be something very bad hidden behind it. One should respect what God has given to them.

Q2. How/Why did you think of making a short film?
In today’s busy life, short films are an easy way to get entertained. Moreover these films get you support and recognition from international and national film festivals. I personally feel it is an easy and and effective way to showcase your talent and give a message to people. Beant Deol, who is the co-producer of the film, has supported me through out the project.

Q3. Where will you be showcasing the film?
Well, this is my first film so I believe I would have done my mistakes of a first timer. Still I want it to reach to a maximum people and get a feedback. I am sending it to a lot of film festivals and I’m hopeful it will be selected in PIFF Toronto.

Q4. Tell us about your background? (It can include information about where you come from, your academic qualification, your experience in film making)
I come from Rajpura and am pursuing MBA in International Business. My elder sister Rajneet Drall is an actress. She is also the primary producer of my film. She is working in a Hindi Film in Mumbai. She is the one who inspired me to get into direction. So with my studies, I started working in a hindi film Panjo, but the film didn’t complete. Later I assisted Harman Aggarwal in a Punjabi Feature film Suhe Phull, the name of which has now been changed to Kirdaar. My next project is with Harjit Ricky. Once Upon a Time in Amritsar, the film is releasing on April 29, 2016. At present I’m working in Mumbai on a Hindi feature film as an associate director.

Q5. Would we see more short films from you in the future?
Yes, definitely. With short films I can showcase my talent to people with just small capital. Also it is like a hobby too. Rest, I’m hopeful that i will come up with some big project soon.
