Actor and singer Tarsem Jassar has recalled a striking real-life incident he experienced while travelling abroad with a Sikh Motorcycle Club, describing how the moment reinforced his understanding of identity, dignity, and calm resistance in the face of racism.
Speaking during promotions of his upcoming film Dastaar, Jassar said the group was approached by some individuals who made mocking remarks about their turbans (Dastaars). The men reportedly questioned Sikh practices and made insensitive comments about not wearing helmets, while also pointing to the Sikh kirpan (Sri Sahib) and referring to it disrespectfully as a “dagger.”
Jassar shared that instead of reacting with anger, he chose to respond with composure and clarity. He calmly explained, “What you call a dagger, we call Sri Sahib,” emphasizing that Sikh religious symbols carry deep spiritual meaning and are not objects of violence, but representations of responsibility, courage, and faith.
He further explained that the Dastaar and Sri Sahib are not just cultural identifiers but sacred articles of Sikh belief, associated with discipline, honour, justice, and the historical sacrifices made by the community over generations.
Reflecting on the experience, Jassar said such moments serve as reminders for Sikhs to carry their identity with confidence and awareness. He encouraged young Sikhs to respectfully educate those who are genuinely unaware, while also standing firm against deliberate disrespect and racist behaviour.
Interestingly, the incident mirrors the central theme of his upcoming film Dastaar, scheduled for release on 17 July 2026, which portrays the struggles of a Sikh immigrant confronting racism in 1980s Britain.
Jassar’s account has resonated with many, highlighting how real-life experiences often reflect the messages explored in cinema, particularly around cultural identity, resilience, and the importance of respectful dialogue in diverse societies.
