Sky Digital Pvt Ltd Files Rs 10 Crore Defamation Suit Against Singer Kaka, Court Halts His Music Releases

In a legal confrontation that has captured public attention, Pinky Dhaliwal’s company, Sky Digital Pvt Ltd, has filed a defamation lawsuit against singer Kaka, seeking damages of Rs 10 crore. The lawsuit follows Kaka’s earlier complaint against the company, with Sky Digital accusing the artist and his label of breaching a contractual agreement and making defamatory statements that have harmed the company’s reputation.

According to Sky Digital Pvt Ltd, the two parties entered into a three-year distribution agreement on September 9, 2021. Under the terms of the contract, Kaka and his label were required to deliver 18 songs over the course of the agreement—six songs each year. However, the company alleges that Kaka and his team have failed to fulfill their obligations, delivering only eight songs so far. Sky Digital contends that despite this breach, Kaka and his label have made defamatory statements against the company, damaging its business and standing in the industry.

The plaintiff further claims that it has already made a payment of Rs 3,70,27,937 as part of the contract’s terms and is prepared to make the remaining payment, provided that the terms of the agreement are respected. However, the situation worsened when Kaka allegedly released two songs through a third party after issuing a termination notice to end the contract.

In response to these claims, the Mohali court has issued an interim order, restraining Kaka and his label from releasing any new songs to third parties in violation of the contract. The order will remain in effect until the next court hearing, scheduled for April 3, 2025.

This legal move has placed a temporary halt on Kaka’s music releases, further escalating the ongoing legal dispute between the artist and the company. Sky Digital Pvt Ltd's defamation suit also raises questions about the management of music contracts, where disputes over unmet obligations and public statements can lead to significant legal challenges.

As both parties await the next hearing, the case highlights the growing tensions in the music industry between artists and their business partners, as well as the potential financial and reputational consequences of contract violations and public disputes.
